I graduated with a double major in Accounting and Finance, and Risk Management from St. Mary’s University. St. Mary’s supports students in their journeys to become well-rounded professionals. During my last semester, ADKF came to a career fair my school hosted. I met Angela Jacquez, the Marketing and Recruiting Specialist with the firm, and saw a former classmate that was then working for ADKF. He told me about his wonderful experience with the firm. After talking to Angela, I knew I wanted to be part of the amazing team they were telling me about. About a month later, I met more people from the firm at a recruiting event at Top Golf. Everyone was very welcoming, fun, and friendly. I always looked to gain experience in public accounting while being part of the right team. ADKF was the answer to my prayers. I talked to senior managers, a partner, staff, and current interns during that event. I walked away with an enthusiastic heart waiting to hear back for an interview.
In November 2019, I went to the firm with an opportunity for an interview. That same day, I left the office that would soon be my new home away from home. The most beneficial part about this internship was the support and mentorship that everyone offered. I had the honor of starting my career in public accounting at a firm where everyone was willing to coach me and help me succeed. In this field, each tax project has a budget of hours. I was afraid of going over these budgets. However, I will tell all students looking for an internship in public accounting that if I was able to get through it and learn, I am confident you will too.
I cannot express enough how much everyone supported me throughout the internship, from other interns to partners. Before ADKF, I only had experience with filling out tax returns from volunteering time with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA) program. ADKF helped me strengthen skills such as time management, organization, analytical thinking, communication, and tax preparation, among others.
It surprised me how many returns a strong and united team can complete together in just a few days or even hours. Accountability is crucial for accomplishing tax deadlines. It is amazing how everyone at ADKF is supporting each other and counting on one another. As an intern, I did not have a list of clients so I would help different staff and managers complete returns. I really enjoyed this because I had the opportunity to expand my knowledge.
If you are interested in applying for an internship in public accounting, do not be afraid to do so. I highly recommend applying to ADKF. You will be surprised by how much knowledge you gain and how grateful you will be for the great ADKF team. During any internship experience, do not hesitate to ask questions because this is the only way you will grow and learn without limits. ADKF opened its arms to me and I will be forever thankful that I said yes to an opportunity with them, and that I am part of such an amazing team of accountants.
