Stephen Cole joined the ADKF family in the Spring of 2023 as a Tax Manager, bringing over nine years of accounting experience. Adapting to new environments and challenges is something he's quite accustomed to and welcomes.
Born in Miami, Florida, Stephen lived there for three months before moving to Kingston, Jamaica, where he stayed until he was nineteen. Stephen was involved with many varsity sports there such as basketball, soccer, swimming, and water polo. He then attended Virginia Wesleyan University, graduating with a Bachelor of Administration in Business. Although his degree wasn't in accounting, he decided in his first year that he wanted to become an accountant and CPA. He worked closely with his college advisor to ensure he met the hour requirements to sit for the CPA exam.
His advice to those seeking to obtain their CPA is to "do it as soon as you can – as cliché as it is. It’s the truth.” As you establish yourself in your profession, you'll take on more responsibilities and challenges, making it best to pursue certification while you have the time. Don’t get too caught up on one section as it will slow you down and you will never feel ready.
When asked why he chose public accounting, Stephen described his previous position in industry as repetitive and unfulfilling. He finds public accounting to be a consistent challenge and a puzzle. Examining tax law for each unique situation feels like trailblazing, as public accounting firms do not share their returns with one another. Each client and return are unique, preventing the use of a one-size-fits-all approach.
Stephen also is interested in how governmental regulation and business trends can change the landscape of industries and taxes. One example is an article he recently wrote on the reclassification of cannabis and how it affects business taxes in the Boerne Business Monthly in the June 2024 edition. No matter your stance on the issue, CPA’s such as Stephen and our team here at ADKF can grasp what is the bigger picture and how they can ensure their clients are getting the best financial advice.
What is one “easy thing” you have not checked off your bucket list?
“Bungee jumping or sky diving.”
What is one simple food that you will not try?
Chitlings.

“’Halo’ by Beyoncé. Actually, sang it recently!”
What is your passion outside of work?
“Self-improvement. Gym, pickup basketball, and reading. Currently re-reading 5 Chairs 5 Choices – Own your behaviors, Master your communication, Determine your success. by Louise Evans.”
Stephen is an avid follower of Track and Field (particularly the sprint events), and a huge fan of the Boston Celtics who recently won their 18th championship title.
