Audit Supervising Senior, Melanie Gamez, is a native San Antonian. She has been in public accounting for the past thirteen years. Melanie originally found her passion for accounting while attending Business Careers High School, where they offered elective accounting courses. She completed Principles of Accounting I through III, then followed her passion for accounting by attending and graduating from the University of Texas San Antonio, with her Bachelor Degree in Accounting. She continued on to earn a Master of Accountancy from Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Melanie joined the Audit Department here at ADKF in November of 2014. Since then, she has learned from the partners and her peers. ADKF has helped Melanie in her career development by providing classes throughout the year for the staff. During her time here at ADKF, Melanie has faced many challenges she was able to overcome because of her experience in public accounting and the help of the partners and her peers. She would best describe ADKF as client and family oriented.
Outside of ADKF, Melanie spends her time reading and with her family, who mean everything to her. Even though it is hard to find a balance between career and family, Melanie has been successful. Once she is done for the day, she leaves work and turns her focus on her home life. Although COVID has brought its challenges to both the firm and its employees, Melanie has enjoyed working from home and spending quality time with her family.
With over six years here at ADKF, Melanie’s advice to prospective audit interns and accounting majors would be to ask questions, take notes, and apply what is taught. “Standards change, but the principle is still the same. I recommend accounting majors go into public accounting for a year or two preferably at a small to mid-size firm. This will allow them a chance to work on a majority of the audit areas and a variety of industries.”
